In Conclusion...

Lynne Wright

Our thanks to Lynne Wright for being an integral and outstanding Mistress of Ceremonies. After each speaker, Lynne made some insightful comments and valuable suggestions and noted some common themes:

Encouraging backgrounds – mothers, mentors (male and female), even ancient fossil role models – looking for encouraging cultures as models for science.

Perseverance – you can do it; stick at it;

Ladders – climb and climb – especially if you are short!

Interdisciplinary – multidisciplinary, interdependent, complementarity. Essentially, if one specialisation isn’t enough, seek another.

Databases – global network sharing, through websites, a way of sharing work, bioinformatics, health informatics, cyclones/corals, networks – even 195,000 years ago. The mitochondrial DNA shows social networks led to transmission of ideas.

Gender issues – in some countries it is not questioned about women working in non-traditional areas - why is it so unusual in Australia?

Visibility vs invisibility – women need to make sure they are visible, that their expertise is acknowledged – so they don’t become invisible.
