The theme of this edition of the WISENet Journal is development and change.
We look at cell development; the changes that can happen during ageing,
including Alzheimer’s disease; changing careers; plus a section devoted to
professional development, including mentoring, protecting your ideas using
intellectual property law and hints on career development and how to access
funding resources.
Change is an ever present fact of life, and society seems to be moving towards
even faster change, whether we like it or not. If we are prepared for and
accepting of the idea of change then we can lobby for changes that will suit us,
e.g. more flexible working conditions. By working together, for example, by
sharing resources via the DOSSER facility, we can cope with change and make it
work for us.

Cover Image: A Drosophila larva with a w;
enGAL/UASpblTC genotype, stained for expression of the pebble gene. En
stands for engrailed and is a gene that expresses in a banded pattern. En acts
as a location guide during development and can be used to show what’s happening
during a particular developmental stage. GAL4 is a yeast transcription factor
that binds to the UAS (upstream activating sequence). The enGAL4 is a driver of
expression affecting expression of the gene downstream of the UAS, which in this
case is pebble in the pattern of the expression of en.
