Dame Bridget Ogilvie a Fellow of AAS

 
 

 

It is a pleasure to report the election of Dame Bridget Ogilvie, AC DBE FAA FRS, as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences. Distinguished for her work in parasitology, science administration, research and education she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from University of Wollongong (UOW) in 2005 and currently serves as Chair for the International Advisory Board of the UOWbased Australian Centre of Excellence in Electromaterials and as an advisor to the Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute.

An Australian hailing from NSW, Dame Bridget attended UNE and Cambridge University where she conducted pioneering research on the immune systems of parasites. She served as Director of the Wellcome Trust one of the world’s largest medical research bodies, and has contributed to numerous boards and government bodies as an advocate of the benefits of science research. In 1996 Ogilvie was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 2003 became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 2007 she was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia for distinguished service in biomedical research and support for global health research.
