Sally Male is an editor of this issue of the Wisenet Journal. She is a PhD
student at The University of Western Australia (UWA). She has a Bachelor of
Engineering (Electrical) with Honours from UWA and has taught electrical
engineering at UWA and Curtin University of Technology. Sally’s earlier research
was in control. She has conducted the Women in Computing and Engineering Project
at Curtin, published on women in engineering, and is the West Australian
representative on the National Women in Engineering Committee of Engineers
Australia.
Sally Male’s PhD project is called the Competencies of Engineering Graduates
(CEG) Project. She will develop an instrument for surveying workplace
supervisors to profile the generic competencies of engineering graduates. This
will help to keep engineering courses aligned with industry requirements.
The first large scale survey in the Project profiled the work and required
competencies of engineers with 5 to 20 years of experience since graduation.
Over 300 valid responses were received. Competencies that received the highest
average ratings of importance included communication, self-management, teamwork,
interaction with people in diverse disciplines/professions/trades, commitment to
doing one’s best, problem-solving and honesty.
