Knock
on Wood: Harvesting the potential of gender balanced
forestry management ...
August 2005 sees the first meeting
in the Southern Hemisphere of the Gender Research in Forestry Unit of the
International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO). Our Unit is
dedicated to identifying, explaining and redressing the continuing gender
inequities in the forestry industry throughout the world. Of particular
importance is the need to have management actually implement the often present
‘family friendly’ policies; something that appears to be poorly handled at many
levels. To this end, the meeting will have a particular emphasis on gender
imbalance at the management level – is there a ‘wood’ ceiling? Through
presentations and workshops a range of issues will be investigated.
Knock on Wood: Harvesting the
potential of gender balanced forestry management ...
will be held at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat in the Lamington National
Park from 4th to 7th August. The meeting has three major themes: identifying the
current situation with respect to gender equity issues in the forest workplace,
presenting research into gender and equity issues, and designing and
implementing management policy for gender equity in the forest workplace. It is
hoped that men and women from many countries will attend this meeting, and that
the workshop activities will produce ways forward to address the current gender
imbalances apparent in the forestry industry throughout the world. We would
really like participation from people in other disciplines who have faced gender
equity issues and overcome them. The venue is a wonderful environmental retreat
and promises to provide a relaxing background for our discussions.
