Editorial
This Queensland Link Group Journal
reflects a strong presence of scientific women in the region. Behind each story
can be felt great activity, intense professional commitment, and throughout
there is a very, very strong sense of caring.
The stories are as diverse as the
micro-regions within the State. Stories on writing for children, writing in
retirement (from Airlie Beach), Teaching Fellowships, Science Meets Parliament,
plant conservation, the statistics of crop breeding, a visit to Epping Forest
(and all its wonders), celebration of International Women’s Day and even a
conference on addressing gender inequalities in forest management. There is also
an introduction to our new WISENET Public Officer, Robyn Porter – another very
caring story.
We can only hope that this Journal
raises renewed awareness of WISENET and that a new Queensland Link Group
Convenor will emerge. Enormous thanks to Sarah Ashmore who offered to ‘fill in
for a short time’ and generously stayed for three years.
There is much activity in Queensland:
we have contact from politicians wanting to improve things for women scientists
in Queensland, particularly in remote regions; great candidates for the Smart
State – Smart Women’s Awards; and enquiries about membership in areas away from
Brisbane/Griffith like Rockhampton and Townsville. Clearly WISENET in Queensland
still has an important part to play.
