Tribute - Jean Hollis Weber

Diana Temple

Jean Weber has been a valuable WISENET volunteer for ten years. Her professional skills in information technology made her a great asset. Jean first started helping the WISENET Journal team in 1992, when Anne Skates, Carrie (Arkinstall) Bengston and Nancy Mills were joint Editors. When this group stepped aside, Jean took on the responsibility in 1995 and was Honorary Editor for nearly 4 years. She also undertook the layout for the journal and was able to provide a series of quirky cover designs from non-copyright sources, all of which was a huge contribution.

Jean played an important part in the successful production in 1997-8 of "Science Futures". This was a special issue of the WISENET Journal aided by a federal government grant, which promoted careers in science.  Devised by a volunteer group in Sydney, plus Nancy Mills in Melbourne, it was distributed to all Australian secondary schools and very well received.

When she decided to adopt a new lifestyle in north Queensland, Jean agreed to become WISENET's honorary Website Editor.  Her valuable contribution as editor was acknowledged in the editorial of Issue 49 the journal, November 1998. This position she has held since late 1998, when the present website was established through the goodwill of Professor Graham Johnston at the University of Sydney.  WISENET owes Jean a big thank you, and we wish her well in her retirement.
