WOMEN ACHIEVING IN SCIENCE

Compiled by Diana Temple

Dr Liz Dennis

The inaugural Prime Minister's Prize for Science has awarded to Dr Liz Dennis and Dr Jim Peacock of CSIRO Plant Industry for the discovery of the flowering gene; work that will help boost the world grain harvest by millions of tonnes.

The Prime Minister's Prize for Science, the nation's premier science award valued at $300,000, is presented to Australian scientists who promote human welfare through an outstanding achievement in science or technology.

Dr Annette Gough

The Victorian Association for Environmental Education have selected Wisenet Member Annette Gough as Victorian Environmental Educator of the Year, for her substantial long-standing contribution to environmental education. Annette, who is a Senior Lecturer at Deakin University, was this year elected the first female president (in 91 years!) of the Gould League of Victoria.

Professor Christa Critchley

A significant force in WISENET's beginnings in Canberra in the 1980s, Christa Critchley has recently been promoted to Professor of Botany at the University of Queensland. Congratulations Christa.

Dr Marianne Vonau,

Newly-elected President of the Neurosurgical Association of Australasia is Dr Marianne Vonau from Prince of wales Hospital in Sydney. This is probably a world-first: a woman president of a national neurosurgical society.
