Editorial

The WISENET Journal is 50 issues old - quite a milestone. Our first issue was published in April 1984 when Carmel Macpherson wrote of "CSIRO - still a man's world". We would like to think that we have progressed since then.

We are delighted to celebrate the 50th issue of the WISENET journal by congratulating our convenor Diana Temple who has been awarded Membership of the Order of Australia (AM). Judy Mackinolty's cover story applauds Diana's energy, encouragement and sheer hard work for WISENET.

Having reached the 50th issue, it seems an appropriate time to include indexes of the major articles and women scientists whose histories have appeared in journals 1 - 50. We plan to place these indexes, which were compiled by Margaret Hartley, on the WISENET web pages along with a list of the libraries which keep the journal. One of these libraries is the Jessie Street National Women's Library, and Shirley Jones' article introduces this important resource.

We also include the last two profiles in the Science Futures series and a report describing the successful launch of Sciences Futures in Western Australia. These profiles are now also available on our web page. By the way in the last issue of the WISENET journal we failed to acknowledge Nancy Mills as the author of the Science Futures profiles. Our apologies and thanks to Nancy.

As always, WISENET continues to question our role in the scientific community and whether we are achieving our objectives, and we welcome any criticism and assistance from our members.

If there are more than the usual typographical oddities in this issue of the journal, please forgive my new kitten who has yet to learn not to walk on the keyboard, and my son who has managed to download, and irreversibly install, an English to French translator which kicks in every time I push the right mouse button.
