Pamela Parker grew up in Iowa and Kansas, in dry rangeland areas which are now experiencing many environmental problems in common with those of the Murray-Darling basin. Dr Parker was educated in forestry and ecology at Yale, and did postgraduate studies at Harvard. She went on to hold academic positions at the University of Chicago and, later, Cornell, but also held positions with the Chicago Zoological Society before becoming involved with the Bookmark project.
In 1992, following a challenge gift from the McCormick Foundation, a private US foundation, Pamela lobbied the Federal Government for money to acquire land which would form the basis of the Bookmark reserve. When the land purchase was in place, the McCormick Foundation responded to a community request for an Environment Centre to serve as a gateway to the reserve and a showcase for public education and community actions. To this additional major gift from the Foundation, state, federal and local funding was added in order to create the Centre.
The charitable foundations include The Ian Potter foundation, The Myer foundation, The Williamson Foundation, the John T. Reid Charitable Trust, and the McKormick foundation.
George Rabb is a well-known biologist; Mike Harper was formerly the District Manager of Murraylands Parks; Kevin Smith is a retired deputy principal and Pat Feilman is the Executive Secretary of The Ian Potter foundation.
