This organisation was founded in 1995 with the aim of finding practical ways in which women scientists with young families could overcome problems to make the most of their careers.
Involved in the formation of the group were the Education and Training sub-Committee of the CRC for Cellular Growth Factors, WEHI, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, CSIRO Molecular Chemistry, Biomolecular Research Institute and AMRAD Operations Limited.
Activities have included a Seminar series, "Women in Science", a course to improve communication skills, career seminars which explored ways in which women could identify and improve working skills, and discussion groups concerned with other issues facing women in the workplace.
A maternity leave proposal has been drafted covering such matters as financial help for child care so that women can maintain contact with their profession (eg attending conferences, provision of significant literature, help with home computing, and advice to assist the transition back to full time work).
The initiatives undertaken have encouraged increased awareness of the problems of young women in following a career in science and can provide a model for similar programs in similar institutes.
